This project is one of seven segments to upgrade Route 46 from a two-lane conventional highway to a four-lane expressway east of Paso Robles. The landscape scope covered erosion control, replacement planting for biological and visual impacts, and wetland creation and restoration. Wildlife crossings, jump-outs, modified wing walls, retaining walls, and slope reinforcements were built to protect mature Valley and Blue Oaks and minimize biological impacts. This project received the 2013 Excellence in Transportation award in the Environment category for its incorporation of features designed to protect the natural environment and preserve the visual integrity of the corridor.
