This project constructed 14 wetland basins and portions of the California Coastal Trail as mitigation for the roadway realignment project on Highway 1 in San Luis Obispo County, addressing coastal erosion. The project included restoring and enhancing natural habitat, including 3.25 acres of coastal prairie wetlands and 3.8 acres of coastal prairie vegetation communities. Design and construction considerations included extensive soil and hydraulic mapping, removal of weed-infested soil, native soil stockpiling, fine grading, wetland construction using bentonite clay, native seed and plants, scientific soil and moisture data collection and monitoring using infiltrometers, transducers, and piezometers, and invasive plant establishment.
