This project re-constructed the existing 1912 highway bridge to create a multi-use pedestrian, bicycle and equestrian facility adjacent to Highway 154 in Los Olivos. The bridge, one of the state’s oldest related to automotive travel, was rebuilt to provide essential community connection and safe routes to schools between residential neighborhoods and downtown Los Olivos. Architectural treatments include the salvaged stone reused in the bridge railing, stained handrails, interpretive panels which highlight local history, evolution of transportation modes, native flora and fauna, and the ‘jack-arch’ construction technique used in the original 1912 bridge. Other elements include an integrally colored concrete bridge, decomposed granite pathways, and native ornamental and riparian planting.
