Vehicle Strike/Impound Policy:
The San Andreas State Trooper Unit is devoted to maintaining the safety and peace of our community. Part of this mission involves regulating vehicles associated with criminal activities. Depending on the severity of the crime, vehicles can be impounded for a specified duration.
Impound SOPs Personal Cars.
• If a personal vehicle is used in a crime that is nonviolent. For example, a 10-80 for a traffic stop the vehicle should be sent to the appropriate impound without a hold.
• If a personal vehicle is used in an intermediary crime. For example, a bank robbery that results in a 10-80 but no shootout, or assault with a deadly weapon occurs (melee weapons). The vehicle should be documented via the MDW and impounded in a 12-hour hold.
• If a personal vehicle is used in a violent crime. Example ANY CRIME that results in a shootout/ attack with a melee weapon/ if the vehicle is used as a weapon against a person or any shooting occurs FROM the vehicle. The vehicle should be documented via the MDW and impounded in a 24-hour hold.
• If the same personal vehicle is used in an intermediary or violent crime within the same 24-hour period of each other the impound time should be doubled. (12 hours becomes 24 and 24 becomes 48)
• Repeat offending vehicles will be investigated by CID/Supervisory Troopers and where appropriate all evidence of repeat infractions shall be sent to the DA’s office for them to pursue cease and desist injunctions or where appropriate longer seizures by the State.
