Peak weekday flows - cycling

Analysis of  my A200  Dockhead  (Jamaica Road, Southwark) manual cycle counts. 2012 to 2023.

Pattern is very similar in both morning and evening peaks. Evening peaks are lower, but duration of peak is greater, so same number of cyclists, but peak flows less. Steady increase from 2012-2020. then Covid. No-one going to work, so few weekday cyclists. Since end of most restrictions cycing (and return to work) have steadily increased. Finally in 2023 numbers are back to pre Covid levels. In second half of 2023 levels are distinctly higher than pre covid. If you extrapolate the pre Covid trend (red dashed lines) your see present (Autumn 2023) level is just a bit above the trend.

Looks as though cycling may keep going up - no sign of rate of increase post Covid slowing. Note the pattern for motor traffic is quite different. Only fell sharply for 1-2 months then returned to pre-covid level and stayed there. At peak the cylists are about 70% mode share. Can also compare with return to work data and with tube and bus data. Not up to date on that. But does look as though cyciing may have recovered more than overall travel to work, i.e. proprtion of people cycling may have increased. Will be interesting to see national statstics for 2023 when they eventually appear.
