It is important for you to get the Zoom app on your phone or computer so you can participate in class.
Some easy tips and tricks for students. Learn the best way to use Zoom and make the most out of your English classes!
ETIQUETTE and BEST PRACTICES:
Come to class consistently and try to be on time! If you join a class late, please don’t interrupt your teacher or other students. Wait for them to stop speaking and then say hello or ask what you’ve missed.
Make sure your microphone and camera are working before joining class. Give yourself about 5-10 minutes before logging in so that you do not disturb your class while getting ready!
Wear headphones, when possible. They help with background noise!
Mute yourself when you aren’t talking. This is very important for students with other people or animals in their homes that might be making noise. [See “How to Mute”]
If your internet is unstable, turn off your camera and only use the voice call. [See “How to Turn Off Cam”]
Use the chat if you have a question, but don’t want to interrupt (or if you are having technical trouble). You should also check the chat to see if your teacher has written anything to you or the whole class! [See “How to Use Chat”]
Let other people in your house know that you are in class so that they won’t interrupt.
Make sure your zoom is using your real name when you log in to the zoom class and not something like “iPhone” or “Lenovo Computer”. [See “How to Enter Your Name”]

Understanding Zoom Vocabulary
HOW TO:
1. How to Mute:
Press the microphone button on the bottom left of your screen. When there is a red line through it, that means you are muted, and no one can hear you talk. If there is no line through the microphone button, then that means that your mic is “hot” and everyone can hear what you are saying, what is happening in your home, etc. It is BEST to keep your mic muted until you are ready to talk!
2. How to Turn Off Cam:
Press the camera button on the bottom left of your screen. It is next to the microphone button. When there is a red line through it, that means your camera is off and no one can see you. If there is no line through the camera button, then that means that your camera is on and everyone can see what you are doing. It is best to keep your camera on the whole time, unless your internet is unstable. If your internet is slowing down and/or you are hearing robot voices or the video from your teacher is broken, turn your camera off. It might make your internet work better.
3. How to Use Chat:
The chat button is between the Participants button and the Share Screen button. If you want to chat with other students, ask a question while your teacher talks, or read something your teacher types to the class, click on the CHAT button. It looks like a speech bubble. (See the image circled in RED below). If you click this, it will open a window for you to type in. It is best to check the “Chat” throughout class. If there is a new message, it will highlight ORANGE and flash.
If you are using a device like a cell phone or tablet, your chat button is located on the BOTTOM of your screen. It looks like Figure 1. Next, look for the CHAT under the More section, which is displayed with three dots. (See Figure 2 with the BLUE circle). When you click this, a menu will pop up with several more options. You will click on Chat. It is usually the 3rd option from the top. (See the image circled in GREEN.)
4. How to Enter Your Name:
When you join a meeting on a computer, there is a box for the meeting ID or the link. There is a second box that says, “Enter your name”. In this box, write your name so that your teacher knows who you are!
On a device, you can write your name in the second box. See the box labeled “Student Name” below and write your name in that space. (It is circled in red.)
