Physician Assisted Suicide Legal in these states: (requirements to perform a prescribed assisted suicide drug)

  • Oregon: Doctor must be a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.)or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O) and the Physician must be willing to participate in the act
  • Montana: Written request
  • Vermont: Doctor must be (D.O) or (M.D) and can be the only one to perform the act
  • Washington: Health care providers are not required to provide prescription and (D.O.) and (M.D) is only one qualified to perform act
  • Colorado: Individual with 6 months or less to live may request the prescription to die, if request is tampered criminal penalties will be enacted
  • California: A patient wanting the prescription must commit two oral requests, min of 15 days apart, and a written request to the physician
  • District of Columbia: Patient must submit two oral requests min of 15 days apart and a written request to the physician before the 2nd oral request
  • Hawaii: Patient must make 2 oral requests, 20 day waiting period in between and a written request signed by 2 witnesses, not family members

  • 3 States (Alabama, Massachusetts, West Virginia) prohibit assisted suicide by common law
  • 4 states (Nevada, North Carolina, Utah, Wyoming) have no specific laws regarding assisted suicide, may not recognize common law, or unclear of the legality of the issue
