Mathcounts. Our coaches will select 12 students to represent our school in the chapter mathcounts. The top four students would be the CVMS school team and participate in the team competition as well. A mathcounts competition has four rounds: sprint round, target round, team round, and countdown round.
Sprint round: Focuses on speed and accuracy. Students have 40 minutes to complete 30 math problems without a calculator.
Target round: Focuses on problem-solving and mathematical reasoning. Students receive 4 pairs of problems and have 6 minutes to complete each pair. In this round, students are allowed to use a calculator.
Team round: Focuses on team work in combination with the previous skills. Students have 20 minutes to complete 10 math problems. The use of a calculator is allowed in this round as well.
The Chapter Competition will be scheduled in Feb 2026.
Top teams from the chapter mathcounts would qualify for the state mathcounts; in our case, this means southern California. The State Competition will be scheduled in Mar 2026.
AMC 8. This competition is organized by Mathematical Association of America (MAA). It is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The contest will be in Jan 22-28, 2026 (tentatively Jan 28, but exact date is TBD). This is a computer based test at school.
AMC 10. This is another competition organized by the MAA. It is a 25-question, 75-minute, multiple-choice examination. The AMC 10 is for students in 10th grade and below. Our students can take AMC 10 A and AMC 10 B. These exams are one week apart, and they will be scheduled in Nov 2025. AMC10A is scheduled for Nov 5 and AMC10B is scheduled for Nov 13. An excellent performance in this competition leads to a qualification in the AIME. This is a computer based test at school.
AIME. The American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) is a challenging competition offered for those who excelled on the AMC 10 and/or AMC 12. The AIME is a 15-question, 3-hour examination, in which each answer is an integer number between 0 and 999. Top-scoring participants on the AIME are invited to take the USAJMO (or USAMO). AIME is in Feb 2026. The exact date of the contest will be announced here. This is a computer based test at school or at the location given by the San Diego Math Circle.
