OpenAI Campaign

On February 11th, 2026, the CU Office of the President sent out an email to every student and faculty member in the CU system, advertising the University System's new contract with OpenAI. The contract, for a staggering $2 million dollars a year, grants access to ChatEDU products to everyone in the CU system, heralding a shocking abdication of moral and environmental responsibility on behalf of the top decision makers in the CU system. Despite claims that student security and data are protected, the contract proves this is a misrepresentation of the truth, as are claims by the administration that our data will not be used to train new AI models. Furthermore, in addition to that, AI has been proven to reduce brain activity  and capacity for critical thinking. The irony of an educational institution providing its students a "tool" that destroys the ability of critical thinking can not be understated. Nor can the environmental impacts associated with AI be ignored as data centers now jeopardize long standing climate goals. In short, because of concerns around student privacy, student wellbeing and environmental impacts, we have decided to officialy condemn and oppose the contract with OpenAI.
