Revising and editing are the stages where students return to their drafts with fresh eyes and make meaningful improvements. Revising focuses on the big-picture elements—clarity, organization, word choice, and whether their ideas make sense and flow well. Editing comes next, where students fine-tune grammar, punctuation, and spelling. This phase helps students see that good writing doesn’t happen all at once—it’s shaped and polished over time. Through revising and editing, they learn to be more thoughtful, intentional communicators, and they build the skills to take ownership of their work.
GenAI can be used in several ways to help students revise their work. Below are some of the main methods.
Help revise style:
Make sure style is consistent throughout a piece of writing
Change text from one style to another
Suggest ways to improve the style of the document
Requires honing the prompts and trying multiple prompts
Give feedback: Ask for a specific element to examine. Here are some example prompts:
Does the writing meet the goal of the assignment?
If the desired audience is [define the audience, i.e., college students or marketing managers, etc.], is the tone, content, format, and organization appropriate for that audience?
Is the content focused?
Is the argument well-reasoned?
Does the evidence support the thesis?
Is the information well-developed and thorough?
Is any critical information missing?
Are the sources cited correctly in [provide style guide-MLA, APA)?
Is the included information synthesized within the context of the thesis?
Is the information presented logically?
Is the information presented clearly?
Does the introduction clearly introduce the content of the thesis?
Is the introduction engaging?
Is the thesis statement clear and evident?
Does the writing convey its purpose clearly?
Are the paragraphs organized logically?
Is each paragraph cohesive?
Is the purpose of each paragraph clear?
Do the headings match the content of each section?
Are the topic sentences clear?
Do the transitions between paragraphs make clear the connections between the paragraphs?
Does the conclusion end the document clearly?
Editing: Use AI to get feedback on sentence-level structure, grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Examples:
Refine word choice or reduce repetition
Check for grammar
Check for spelling
Suggest better wording and sentence structure
Check for tone—formal, informal, etc.
Check for consistency in style
Check for over-used words
Check for passive sentence construction
In order to get feedback from AI, provide it the rubric
Prompt it to give feedback specific to the rubric
The benefit of using AI in this part of the process is that “every student is able to receive detailed feedback in the same class period.”
Have students actively assess the feedback they receive by reading AI commentary and highlight points where they could improve
Emphasize that it’s students who are making the choices and to question AI responses that don’t feel “right”
Always, always, always have students reflect and be transparent about their use of AI and how it assisted them in their writing process
"AI-Proof" Writing Activities
Talk Show: Featured Writers Segment
How it Works: Students are put into pairs and read their partner’s draft. Then, they will generate three “talk show host” questions about their partner’s draft (EX: What challenges did you encounter while drafting this work? How would you describe your writing process?). Then, students will take turns interviewing each other (with the potential of having the class act as the audience) and finally they will reflect on the talk show process, considering changes they would make to their draft.
Takeaways: Students can use AI to help them generate interview questions, or you could have AI interview the student.
Steered Peer Review
How It Works: Students will bring in 1 page of their draft. They will use the PCIP method oa peer review and work in small groups. The PCIP method works as follows:
Praise: Students will begin by naming 1 positive thing they noticed about the draft.
Critique: Students will name 1 area of improvement.
Instruct: Students will give a rationale for the area of improvement they named.
Praise: Students will end by summarizing their suggestions for improvement and a final praise comment.
