Featuring n3onblue
This month, we are featuring Deorum: Holy War, a project being developed by n3onblue. To see the project as it stands now, check outs its planesculptor page, found here: https://www.planesculptors.net/set/deorum-holy-war
In a few sentences, what is the premise of Deorum: Holy War?
"Deorum:Holy War is an enemy color guild set with a focus on the world's 5 gods, their disciples, and their opposition. Deorum is also an extension of the planeswalker Winmeari's story (Keep posted on the set's channel in the Discord for upcoming Ao3 chapters as well as some flash I wrote teasing the story.) Deorum was designed with the intention of being an MSEM [Custom Magic format] submission so it includes a handful of reprints and even an returning planeswalker!"
What inspired you to begin creating Deorum: Holy War?
"The origins of Deorum is a long one. Originally the set was called "amashas:holy war" meant to be a sequel/remake of my first set I ever made, "Adventures in Amashas" which was based on the world of my DND setting. This version I wanted to hone in on what I thought the most interesting aspect of that world was, the gods. However to do this properly I felt the need to make a new world as to mold it around these gods. So I took my 5 favorite gods, christened them with new names, and shaped the cults of the world around them."
Where would you say Deorum: Holy War is in the development process?
"Deorum is going through or has had its 3rd major revision. Right now I would say that the set has most of its body, getting above a 1.0 vote last msem voting rotation, so most of its body is ready to go. Now they just need to win the wildcard vote. So while the set may be a complete body, its now just about giving them a nice haircut, and dressing them to the nines so they can look as good as they can to the voting public."
Deorum is being designed with Constructed play at the forefront. How does that affect how you design and balance the set?
"Deorum since its origin has had the (Not so) subtle intention of one day weaseling its way into msem, simply because that is a goal of mine. This does affect the type of cards I put in the set. Exeunt being a common for example is something that I would potentially be problematic for constructed standard power level formats, while still being a solid card in limited. Another thing that affects the limited would be the strengths of the rares and mythics vs that of the uncommons and commons. The goal of Deorum was to be an era defining but not format warping set. The best way in my opinion to do this is to make strong build around cards. You can see Solus as a good example of this, something that rewards you for playing cards you may otherwise never."
How have you found working with a designed-for-digital mechanic like Conjure to be?
"Luckily I had alot of help from one of the most recent sets added to msem, that being Bergland's Beyond the Blackwall having Data-points. Of all the mechanics in deorum the last one to be designed was Recruitment, replacing the pray mechanic and completely chaning RW's identity in the set. It fills a nice slot between convicted and minimalist, being a spell to trigger the convicted, and being a token to sac for minimalist and to mainly support its own go wide strategy. Ultimately the digital only aspect of this mechanic is more freed design space than it has changed anything, and I think is still valuable if kept simple. (Don't expect specialize from me however.)"
What is your favorite card in Deorum: Holy War?
"Probably Me, Devine Aspirant// The Placebo God. Me is simply a narsicist goblin who lived alone in a cave and believed he was a god. Believed so hard that Fides, the god of conviction and belief found him, and rewarded his conviction by gifting him a fraction of his divinity, which ignited his spark and made him incredibly powerful."
Would you like to give any special thanks to anyone on this server for their help?
"I want to thank styles and Nix for being super helpful and supportive during the creation of the set. Shout out to timespiraled pipsqueak cajun Wizernius and canturbury egg for their feedback and continued moderation of msem, additional thanks to pipsqueak for running field test. And a general thanks to everyone in the custom magic community for the ongoing support, weather its being a part of events, responding to my posts in the deorum channel and cct, or just making a great community."
