A strange character naming themselves The Maestro has once again returned to review the results of the design challenge from the previous issue, tasking people to create a spell with X in the cost. A very simple challenge, but still exciting to see how people decided to take something relatively open ended. Let's take a look at the ones that rose to the top this month!
Excellent, most elegant designers,
Hello hello hello, and welcome back! I am totally titillated by the torrent of terrific designs for Episode 2: X Marks the Spot! As shall become routine, a small batch of renders rose above the rest to be highlighted here.
Third Place
Night // Remember (Designed by Magmadragon3)
The Maestro: A strong synergy surprise with a mathy aftermath, Night // Remember is a dream come true for control mages of all ages! Together, these halves are greater than their whole, resulting in a power-packed package of all kinds of advantage. A clever name is also to blame for this card’s third-place fame.
CM Staff: Seeing this card brought on an immediate sense of excitement, readily establishing itself as a unique buildaround for decks that enjoy plenty of grave-casting such as through Flashback and other Aftermath cards. Night letting you mill yourself presents a perfect way to start filling your yard and set up a juicy Remember turn, and the self-exiling clause intrinsic to Aftermath allows for some clever shortcutting on formatting, since instants and sorceries that bring back cards of those types often self exile specifically to prevent looping. And of course, the flavor is fantastic!
Second Place
Call of the Necromancer (Designed by ohmygod)
The Maestro: Ah, a reanimator spell reanimating a mostly mocked and morgue-bound mechanic, strive! “X or less” leads to great success, with many modes of manipulating your mortal monsters. Airtight art and fine flavor lead this throwback grow-back to second place!
CM Staff: There must be a recursion theme this time around, since we have another one hitting our list! Call of the Necromancer positions itself as a very unique take on reanimation spells, bringing back the Strive keyword ability for hitting multiple reanimation targets! Staff were very fond of the succinct yet creative package. Fun note, ohmygod also got second place in the last challenge; very impressive!
First Place
Up For Grabs (Designed by Piguy)
The Maestro: Such superb play patterns! Up For Grabs grabs my attention with its attention to detail in playable perfection. Its counterspell-countering condition forgoes any frustration, and instant speed allows for easy access at the hands of the grabber. For chaotic commander and even perhaps controlled constructed, Up For Grabs nabs this episode’s trophy. Congratulations to Piguy!
CM Staff: Sometimes it's easy to get lost in the competitive and serious nature of Magic, forgetting that at the end of the day the game is all about having a bit of fun. Up For Grabs really spices things up by adding a dash of chaos to the game, especially in a multiplayer one like commander. The thought of everyone putting their cards into a pile in the middle of the kitchen table to play from really warmed our hearts and made us want to give this card a spin! Additionally, it's obvious that some serious thought was put into this design, as restricting the cards to being cast only during the active player's turn prevents a lot of the potential feels-bads of playing with that much potential interaction on the table.
Now, back to business.
Episode 3: Roses are Red, Violets are Blue
While these first two challenges have been an amazing appetizer, my appetite for designs seems to have doubled. This month, I would like you to design a red card and a blue card that share a keyword or ability word. Clever crossplay and compatibility of your cards will be, as is regular, rewarded with my favor. As always, instructions of how to deliver your design shall be found within my home away from home within this server of yours, the #feedback and #showcase threads. Work hard, for my show’s conclusion will coincide with the bestowment of a prize so grand as to illuminate thee for all time.
Good work, good luck, and good night!
-The Maestro
