They will read a variety of texts, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama, with an emphasis on analyzing and interpreting what they read. Students will write informative, persuasive, and narrative pieces, learning to support their ideas with text evidence. They will also expand their vocabulary and improve their grammar throughout the year The course includes research projects and opportunities to practice critical listening and thoughtful responses. Students will also explore how media influences society through the use of technology and multimedia resources.
English Language Arts 7
This course is aligned to and focuses on mastery of both the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for English Language Arts, and the Pennsylvania Assessment Anchors for English Language Arts. Throughout the year, students will work on vocabulary development and the further development of reading critically, and analyzing and interpreting text. Curriculum materials are derived from works of classic and contemporary literature, short stories, novels, biographies, autobiographies, drama, poems, and non-fiction books and articles. Materials have been selected to be intentionally culturally diverse. Students will compose informative, argumentative, and narrative writing pieces. For the first two styles of writing emphasis will be placed on providing relevant and sufficient textual support. Grammar and vocabulary are integrated into all the units of study. Units in this course are organized into five general areas of study: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, and composition.
English Language Arts 8
In 8th Grade English Language Arts, students will develop and refine their reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills through the exploration of diverse literary and informational texts.
