Little John shows Robin the posters of Prince John's grand tournament and tells him,"... at the end of the day there will be an archery competition."
Bargain - A deal or agreement between two parties, often involving a product sold at a lower price.
The sheriff is talking to Much when he says, "Look, I'll make a bargain with you." The deal is that if Much tells the sheriff where to find Robin Hood, he will be spared.
Bullseye - A bullseye is the very center of a target.
At the tournament, Prince John says, "First one to hit the bullseye wins," before making a tiny white eye in the center of the disc that is nearly impossible to see.
Descended - It means to have moved or come down from a higher place or level to a lower one.
After the encounter with the Sheriff, Robin Hood blows a horn, and "...as darkness descended men appeared silently out of the forest." Robin Hood introduces his merry men who appeared out of the darkness and invites Much into his band.
Drawbridge - A type of bridge that can be raised or lowered to allow or block passage, often found at the entrance of castles or over moats.
The Sheriff says, "I'll have my men pull up the drawbridge," after Marian refuses to marry him and tries to run to the Sherwood Forest to be with Robin Hood.
Dwelling - A place where someone lives.
Marian asked Robin, "Will you allow me to rest in your dwelling, here in the forest for a short while?" after he "saves" her from the fake fight with the Sheriff and a soldier.
Gaggle - Used informally to describe a noisy or disorderly group of people.
"A gaggle of armed men ran towards Will," after the Sheriff and Muso caught him giving gold coins to the poor people of Nottingham that Robin Hood had stole from the rich.
Giddy - Means feeling very excited and happy, sometimes to the point of feeling dizzy or silly.
"Robin was wandering through the forest, his heart full, his head giddy with love..." while the Sheriff was making plans to marry Marian so he could capture Robin Hood.
Glen - A narrow valley, usually with a stream running through it, typically found in mountainous areas.
Much sings to himself, "Robin Hood, Robin Hood, riding through the glen, " at the beginning of the story to tell people about the person who steals from the rich to give to the poor.
Grazing - The act of animals eating grass or other low plants in a field or pasture.
The deer that come up behind the singing Much are "Grazing on the edge of the forest."
Harvest - The process of gathering crops from the fields.
The townspeople are describing the damange the King's army has done to their land; one of them says they "stole our harvest," which is what they live off of.
Honour - High respect or esteem, a special privilege or recognition.
"King Richard was a guest of honour" at Robin Hood and Maid Marian's wedding.
Lawbreakers - People who do not follow the law.
The Sheriff says, "All you miserable lawbreakers know him," when he is trying to persuade Much to tell him where to find Robin Hood so he can capture him.
Outlaw - A person who breaks the law and is hunted by the police.
Marian's dad confronts Marian about her relationship with Robin Hood when he says, "Tell me you are not in league with that outlaw Robin Hood."
Pardoned - Means forgiven for doing something wrong or breaking the law.
King Richard declares that "...Robin and all his followers were pardoned" after the Sheriff died and King Richard returned to England.
Persuade - To persuade means to convince someone to do something or believe something through reasoning, discussion, or appeal.
The Sheriff is talking to Muso after they capture Will and says, "But before we hang him let's see if we can persuade him to tell us where we can find Robin Hood."
Revenge - Doing something to hurt someone who hurt you.
After their run-in with the Sheriff and his solider, Much tells Robin,"I swear that one day I shall have revenge on those men that killed my dad."
Saddelbags - Bags that are attached to the sides of a saddle on a horse, motorcycle, or bicycle, used for carrying items.
When Robin Hood defeats the Sheriff and his soliders, he demands they hand over their money. They try to lie by saying they do not have any, and he says, "The money in your saddlebags."
Siege - A military operation where an army surrounds a place.
Much wants to march into Nottingham to rescue Will, but Robin disagrees, by saying, "At the first sign of an attack, they would withdraw not the castle, hang Will Scarlett and laugh at our attempts to lay siege to them."
Trampled - To step heavily on something, causing damage or crushing it.
At the end, during the fight with the Sheriff, Robin hits him while saying, "That's for all the honest people you have hurt, the homes you have burnt, the crops you've trampled."
Turret - A turret is a small tower on a castle or building.
After Marian makes plans to escape all the cages her father and the Sheriff planned to trap her in to keep her from Robin Hood, her father finally tells her, "Then I...will...Lock you in a turret where the only light comes in through a very, very, very, very, very tiny keyhole."
Vanity - Means being too proud about how you look or what you can do.
The Sheriff says, "His vanity couldn't resist it," after Robin Hood showed up at the Prince's tournament to win the silver arrow.
Sanctuary - A safe place where people can be protected.
Robin Hood tells Marian and the others to go to a church, saying, "They will give you sanctuary" from King John's men.
