"When they finish the story": a staged reading coming to Mister John's Music (904 S 9th St)! Oct. 18th @ 7 PM
Curlyfish Productions is the metamorphosis of Curly (Aimee, she/her) and Fish (Doriane, they/she). Unapologetically Jewish and Queer, Curlyfish is dedicated to the dynamic development of untold stories by local Philadelphia artists, through a new perspective onstage.
Art is our tool to:
recognize the unrecognizable, explore the known as an unknown, and above all, challenge.
Curlyfish Productions is an unapologetically Jewish and unapologetically queer space in the Philadelphia theatre community.
But first, it was a question: "What's next for your theatre company?"
Back in 2019, Doriane decided they wanted to produce a ten-minute playfest. They invited Aimee to Chinatown for bubble tea, prepared to spring on her the ridiculous ask of "will you help me make this happen?" Of course, Aimee had been planning to ask Doriane an eerily similar question. Thus, Untold: A 10-Minute Playfest was born.
It wouldn't be a true first-producing endeavor without everything going wrong (yes, including a global pandemic). Trials and tribulations required adaptation, and a completely digital playfest was the outcome. At the end of Untold, a playwright casually posed the question, "What's next for your theatre company?"
Doriane and Aimee didn't have an answer, so they did what they do best: improvised.
Fast-forward one pandemic, a Tribe 12 entrepreneur fellowship program, and several, several, SEVERAL bubble tea meetings later, and we are proud to call ourselves Curlyfish Productions.
Doriane is a playwright, photographer, and performer. They’re intrigued by the unusual. As a writer, they explore the depths of mental health and stories society prefers to discard. Outside of the arts, she is a Security+ certified IT professional who enjoys playing Tetris.
Aimee is a Philadelphia-based performer, producer, and project manager. She is also an improvisor and the founder of two Jewish a cappella groups. Aimee enjoys exploring how creativity and organization can work in tandem. When she isn't project managing, producing with Curlyfish, or singing, Aimee can be found writing in a coffeeshop near her apartment in South Philly.
