According to financial reports from early 2020, a $4000 kW turbine (the median cost for a wind turbine) in a field with average wind speeds of 9.5m/s would cost 12 cents per kWh! This is already cheaper than most fossil fuels, and with those prices dropping, wind energy could soon be cheaper than all fossil fuels!
There is wind almost everywhere in the world. With many pioneers in the field of offshore wind turbines (the ocean has much higher wind speeds), wind could quickly become one of the most reliant sources of energy on Earth.
Wind turbines are designed for 120,000 hours of use, and that normally means it can last up to 25 years if you take good care of it. For every 10 kWh, 1 cent for maintenance is required.
With offshore wind turbines becoming a reality, the opportunity for wind turbine real estate is growing. Onshore wind turbines could also be a solution, and I have listed both below.
These would be of maximum efficiency to use, as in the ocean, given there are no natural barriers to create friction, wind can travel much faster. That means more energy can be harnessed. Today, transportation of energy from oceans has been a barrier to expansion. However, investment programs can be developed to facilitate this infrastructure development.
These could be placed in deserted areas including deserts, hills, plains, and more. Countries such as the United States, Germany, India, China, Spain and the United Kingdom are some of the largest producers of wind energy in the world through the use of turbines. It is important to identify areas for development in locations where people would not move, given it takes up a lot of space.
Wind turbines have gone through some "windy" times. But the possibilities with this magnificent technology could enable it to become an industry with a bright and strong future that would become yet another alternative to fossil fuels.
