THE STORY OF CULGAITH AND ITS PEOPLE based on the book of the same title written in 1959 by Ada Huddart
Culgaith is a fellside village, in Cumbria (formerly in Cumberland, now in Westmorland and Furness) in the North of England.
When the Cumberland Federation of Women's Institutes organised a competition in 1959 for the best Village History, Culgaith W.I. decided to enter, and asked if I would undertake the task. As my family has lived for several generations in Culgaith, and I was born and bred here and have lived practically all my life in or near the village, I am naturally very interested in the old place and decided to "have a go". The history was written in 1959, but a few notes were added in 1960.
When we were awarded First Prize in the competition there were many requests to have it printed.I should like to take this opportunity of thanking all who helped me in any way with this work, which has been a great interest and joy to me. I send greetings to all Culgaith folks wherever they may be, and hope they will get as much pleasure out of reading it as I have got out of writing it.
