Updates

November 1, 2022

Hello once again CUFA community! As the daylight shortens in North America, our excitement grows because CUFA’s Philadelphia conference is getting closer! Please find time to register for the conference (and remember to include CUFA in that registration) if you haven’t done so already.

We also want to announce our second keynote speaker! With a focus on responsibility to see, act, and dream, Ismael Jimenez represents these values in a way that is bound to the Philadelphia educational community. Ismael Jimenez is a dedicated educator, who for the last fifteen years has worked with students in Philadelphia from preschool age to high school. For over a decade, Ismael has led several professional development sessions around social studies content for social studies instructors teaching middle school to the high school level across the city of Philadelphia and the nation. Along with being a dedicated educator in the School District of Philadelphia, Ismael has facilitated several professional developments at postsecondary institutions like the University of Pennsylvania, Penn State University and

Princeton University on issues ranging from structural racism to bridging the knowledge/skill gap of students between high school and postsecondary institutions. Currently, Ismael is an adjunct professor for the University of Pennsylvania’s Urban Teacher Apprentice Program (UTAP). The philosophical orientation that guides Ismael’s teaching and activism is rooted in the theoretical educational framework developed by Paulo Freire which emphasizes the interconnected nature of education with participating in the transformation of the world.

We are excited to learn from Ismael and explore the relationships between social education, community, and justice.

Hello CUFA!

With a little more than a month to go before the conference, we wanted to remind you all to register for the conference! The program looks amazing, and we are excited to be with you all.

In that spirit, we'd also like to announce our first of two keynotes: Dr. Camika Royal!

Dr. Camika Royal is the author of Not Paved For Us: Black Educators and Public School Reform in Philadelphia (Harvard Education Press, 2022). Her work focuses on the intersections of politics, history, and urban school reform. She worked in the public schools of Baltimore City and Washington, D.C., teaching, coaching teachers, and helping to lead a charter high school. Dr. Royal has also worked with various colleges and universities in the Philadelphia and Baltimore regions to teach, coach, and support urban school leaders and teacher educators. Currently, Dr. Royal is an associate professor of Urban Education at Loyola University Maryland. She earned her bachelor of arts degree in English Literature at North Carolina Central University, her master of arts in teaching degree at Johns Hopkins University, and her doctor of philosophy in urban education at Temple University.
