BSA has standardized requisites for each of the Rank Badges, and Workbooks for each of the various required and elective Adventures. The U. S. Scouting Service Project has documented these requirements into checklist and are available through links on each of the pages listed below, or from an index page, by clicking here. ZIP files, containing all of the Checklists for the Rank Badges and all of the Workbooks for the Adventures for each Rank can also be downloaded, by clicking here.
Each program year, there is a set of adventure units required to earn rank as well as additional elective adventures. Ranks levels each have own name and correspond to an elementary school grade:
Instead of a formal uniform shirt, Lions start out with a special Lion Scout T-shirt and workbook and generally meet less often than other dens. The curriculum is very age-appropriate and a great introduction to Scouting
A Scout who is 7 years old or is in the first grade is a Tiger.
A Scout who is 8 years old or is in the second grade is a Wolf.
A Cub Scout who is 9 years old or is in the third grade is a Bear.
A Scout who is 10 years old or is in the fourth grade is a Webelos Scout. The term “Webelos” means “We be loyal Scouts”. Webelos and AOLs each have their own required adventures but the electives are shared and may be completed during either rank year.
Once a Scout has completes the Webelos rank requirements or a new boy joins Cub Scouting in the fifth grade, he may advance to AOL. This program year is designed to complete earlier than the other so the AOL Scouts’ families may visit Troops if they plan to continue on from Cub Scouts to Scouts BSA (our charter organization, Old Bridge United Methodist Church, also charters a Troop for older Scouts).
(All Grades) No matter what age or grade a Cub Scout enters Cub Scouting, he must earn his Bobcat badge before he can advance to the rank of Tiger, Wolf, Bear, or Webelos.
Cyber Chip Requirements To help families and volunteers keep youth safe while online, the BSA has introduced the Cyber Chip training requirement. The Cub Scout Cyber Chip Workbook is available to document completion of both Grade 1-3 and 2-5 requirements. There are no Cyber Chip requirements for Kindergartners.
