In this lesson, students will be asked to reflect on how we remember the Holocaust and how we remember historical events. A set of questions for analyzing a monument can help students get to the meaning of the piece of art and the purpose of the monument.
Students will investigate and interpret three Holocaust memorials and answer the questions found on the Analyzing Memorials Worksheet.
1) Hamburg-Harburg, Germany Permanent Installation
3) Jewish Community Center Holocaust Memorial, West Hartford Memorial Slideshow
Why Remember?
Memorials have many different kinds of goals, including telling an accurate story of the past, expressing nationalist ideas, honoring life, confronting evil, and encouraging reconciliation.
