Rationale: This lesson will help students identify /l/, the phoneme represented by L.
Students will learn to recognize /l/ in spoken words by learning a sound analogy (light saber), practicing finding /l/ in words, and applying phoneme awareness with /l/ in phonetic cue reading by distinguishing rhyming words from beginning letters
materials:
primary paper
pencils
Powerpoint slide with “Larry loves his flat lake” on it
minibooks printout
Word cards with LOG, LONG, LAND, HOME, BACK
Assessment sheets
Procedure:
Introduce the letter l and the sound it makes. You introduce the hand gestures of a lightsaber and every time you say /l/ you do the hand gesture of a light saber. Write the letter L and explain how it looks like someones hands holding the bottom of a light saber.
Get the child to practice with their light saber, making sure they do the land gesture while they produce the sound “l”
Show them how to find /l/ in the example word Left. Stretch out the lllll and make the hand gesture of the light saber.
Introduce the tongue tickler. Larry loves to be outside. He likes going and swimming in the ocean and even going to the mountains!!! But neither of those places are his favorite. Here is our ticker: “Larry loves his little lake”. Get them to repeat it a couple times and then stretch out the letters. Lllllarry lllllloves his lllllllittle lllllllake. Then get them to do it again but this time, separate the /l/ from the word. L-arry l-oves his l-ittle l-ake.
Have the child practice the letter L- both lower and uppercase. Model and practice before you ask them to do it on their own. For uppercase you go all the way to the rooftop, draw a straight line down and then go to the side. For the lowercase start at the rooftop, draw a straight line all the way down to the sidewalk.
Ask if they hear /l/ in long or short. Log or dog. Fan or land. You can get them to move their lightsaber when they hear the /l/.
Have them create this minibook and practice with their lightsaber the letter L. Give them a book talk for the mini book.“We are going to make a book all about the letter (with lightsaber) L! You are going to go on an adventure to find things that start with the letter (With lightsaber) L! I wonder what you will find!” Have them read this in small groups while you walk around and assist. Have them use their lightsaber every time they say /l/. https://www.superteacherworksheets.com/minibooks/l-mini-book.pdf?up=1551352181
Show LOG and explain how to tell if it is log or fog. The L in log (use light saber) tells me to say lll. Let them try with the rest. LONG: long or song. HOME: loam, or home. LAND: land or sand. BACK: back or lack.
To assess, give them pictures and have them circle or color the ones that have /l/ in them. https://www.superteacherworksheets.com/phonics-beginningsounds/letter-l_WFMFZ.pdf?up=1466611200
