Assessment sheet
Procedures:
We are going to learn short vowel words that make an I say /i/. When I say i, it makes me think of iiiiicky stiiiiiicky hands (show image)
Lets hear if we can hear /i/ in some words. When I say mit, the I says /i/. Lets see if I hear it in ‘mine’. No- what about ‘tin’. Yes! Thats it! Iiiiicky stiiicky. Tiiiiin. Now, I am going to say some words and if you hear the sound /i/ I want you to shake your hands like there is something sticky on them. Light, lin, pin, line, fin, shin, time.
Lets look at the spelling of /i/. When we write it, we start at the middle and draw a line down. Then we put a dot on the top of the line. Lets use these letter tiles to spell out the word milk. Lets sounds out how many sounds are in the word milk. M I L K- 4 sounds, so we need four boxes. The first sounds mmmm so I need a mmm. The next sounds is iiii like icky sticky! What letter is this? Thats right! i! Next we have llllll, right! Thats L! Finally we have kkkk what letter makes this sound? Right! K!!! M-I-L-K.
“Now I am going to show you how to read a work with /i/ (shake hand) in it!” Display the word trim. “Okay, so lets look at this I, what did we learn that this says, /i/ great! Now I am going to look at the letters before the I, together them make trrii. Now I am just going to look at the letters after the I. immmmm. When I put them together, the word is trim!”
Now I am going to have you try to make your own words in your letterboxes. Lets first try the word hit. Then lets do shin, dim, hat, bed, crib, six, and wilt.
Now I am going to let you read the words that we just spelled. Remember when we have the letter I it makes the /i/ sound like icky sticky hands. Im going to cover up part of the word so we can find out the sounds of the first part. (uncover and blend). Lets take the /i/ in icky sticky and blend it with the rest of the word. Mmiiiiiiiitten- mitten.
Great job! Now we are going read a book practicing i=/i/. The book is called Liz is Six! For Liz’s sixth birthday, she gets a mitt and plays ball with a pig. When Liz goes up to bat, she hits the ball super far. Do you think the Pig will catch it? Lets read to find out!”
Have the students read the book with a partner. Monitor students as you walk around the classroom.
Okay great- finally I want you to practice this spelling and reading i=/i/ with this worksheet. Fill out the words that match the picture that have the i=/i/ https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Short-I-Worksheets-and-Activities-NO-PREP-Short-Vowel-Worksheets-1432999 (sheet with word bank)
