Thursday, October 6th
Guest Speaker: Dr. Paul DeYoung, Associate Professor at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
Meeting Topic: Is “Quiet Quitting” a Good Thing or Bad Thing?
“Quiet quitting” has been all over the media lately. The concept was captured in a Tik Tok video by “zaidleppelin” that went viral: “Quiet quitting is not that you are quitting your job, but you are quitting the idea of going above and beyond at work. . . .Work is NOT your life. Your work is not defined by your productive output.” This has become controversial depending on your understanding of the phenomenon and your point of view. If nothing else, the controversy has generated a lot of fundamental questions that need to be addressed, particularly in this post-pandemic world, where the nature of work is changing in dramatic ways (e.g., remote work). Dr. De Young, will lead a discussion to address these questions: Why has “quiet quitting” generated so much media hype, right now? What are the causes of quiet quitting? Is quiet quitting a good thing or bad thing? Is this good for your mental health? What about for your career? And what about for the company?
Speaker Bio: Dr. De Young had a successful career as a Human Capital management consultant with some of the top corporate consulting companies for almost 25 years. Then he “quietly quit” in the form of starting his own consulting business to regain some semblance of work-life harmony. Fast forward ten years and he is now the Department Chair of the San Diego, Anaheim, and Los Angeles Business Psychology programs at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. The companies he has consulted for include Deloitte, Willis Towers Watson, Aon, TalentSmart, Sibson, and International Survey Research. Prior to his consulting career, Paul worked for the Navy Personnel Research and Development Center in San Diego as a Personnel Research Psychologist focusing on leadership, productivity gain sharing, and Total Quality Management.
The companies Dr. De Young has consulted to measure over 200, large and small, across a broad spectrum of industries including: Kaiser-Permanente, Allina Health Systems, DuPont, Southern California Edison, USC, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, University of New Mexico, First5LA, National Steel, Precision Casting Corporation, Intellisense, United Nations, Jewish Federation of Long Beach, The Walt Disney Company, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Pharmacia & Upjohn, Nestlé, Toyota Motor Sales, Hyundai, Yamaha, Karma, Verizon, StepStone, T-Mobile, The White House Communications Agency, HP, American Express, State Farm, Honeywell and Hallmark.
Paul received his Ph.D. and an MA in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology, San Diego and holds a BA in Psychology and a BS in Biology from the University of California, Irvine. He is co-author of Measuring Organizational Improvement Impact, Jossey Bass Publishing.

Speaker Bio: SERVANT LEADER - CULTURE STRATEGIST
I am a purpose-driven servant leader and coach that exhibits, joy, empathy, compassion, and character in all aspects of my life. I believe my responsibility in a leadership position is to serve those I work with. My goal is for my interactions to encourage people to grow and become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, and more likely to serve others inside and outside the workplace.
It is my great honor to lead culture strategy at NextLevel Internet. I have the best job in the world, I get to wake up every morning, work from anywhere, create moments of joy, serve an awesome team, and inspire people to truly care along the way. “I would rather flirt with failure than never dance with my Joy.” Wes Moore
It makes me proud that our tribe voted NextLevel Internet Top 10 Best Places To Work by the San Diego Business Journal for 2019-2022, Fortune 2020, 2022 Best Small and Medium Workplaces, and Great Place To Work Certified for 2020-2022.
As I think of the future or the infinite game, it is my desire to forge pathways that fosters diversity and purpose-driven work so that the children of today will have the opportunity as an adult to experience a world of work from anywhere that is BETTER for PEOPLE, BETTER for BUSINESS and BETTER for the WORLD.
