Dr. Susan Adams, Keynote Speaker
Susan A. Adams, PhD in Counselor Education, LPC (Texas), and BC-NCC. Dr. Adams a Full Professor at Liberty University in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program and currently teaches Ethics and Internship courses. Her limited private practice focuses on adult issues, but primarily addresses grief, loss, and bereavement issues with a specialty of dealing with suicide loss.
For more than two decades, she has also been actively involved with volunteer grief and crisis work for Denton County ISD, MRC (Medical Reserve Corp), M.E.N.D. (Mommies Enduing Neonatal Death), and the Loss Team which involves those who have primarily experienced family members coping with suicide death.
She has been active in her counseling professional organizations in a variety of leadership roles such as President of the Texas Counseling Association and an invited professional reviewer for several national and international journals. Dr. Adams is a prolific published writer, strong mentor to her students, and passionate about counseling. Her lengthy list of professional presentations has made her a well-known, much sought after speaker at local, state, regional, national, and international venues as both concurrent and keynote speakers.
Dr. Jonna Byars
Jonna Byars has presented nationally and internationally on the subjects of grief and trauma. Her PhD is in Counselor Education, and she has been training graduate counseling students in addition to writing and presenting on counseling topics for twenty years. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor and National Certified counselor. Jonna maintains a private practice where she specializes in addictions, eating disorders, grief, and trauma. Professor Byars lives with her husband and three children in Texas.
Dr. Deborah Braboy
Dr. Deborah Braboy is an LPC-S in Arkansas and Oklahoma and is specialized to provide tech assisted counseling in Arkansas. She is an Assistant Professor at Liberty University in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program.
Her clinical expertise includes a thriving private practice, Anchored Hope Counseling working with adolescents and adults primarily with grief and loss issues, depression, and anxiety. She is trained in EMDR to use with her clients who have experienced trauma. Because of her journey as a young widow, she has used her experiences to help others in the journey of grief and loss. She enjoys mentoring and training individuals as they enter the counseling field.

Dr. Jose Lopez
Jose Lopez has a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision and a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor (LPC-S) and a Certified School Counselor (CSC) in Texas. Dr. Lopez specializes in multicultural/multilingual topics and is a first-generation immigrant. Dr. Lopez enjoys working with marginalized individuals and advocates for social justice.
Alice Vasquez, Doctoral Candidate
Alice Vasquez is currently a doctoral candidate at Texas A&M-Commerce. Her major is in Counselor Education and Supervision with a cognate in child and adolescent counseling. She is a Texas Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor (LPC-S), a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC), a Texas Certified School Counselor (CSC), and a Certified Humanistic Sandtray Therapist (CHST). She is a bilingual professional counselor, English/Spanish, specializing in grief counseling, domestic abuse counseling, and sandtray therapy.
Angela Waggoner, Doctoral Candidate
Ms. Waggoner specializes in crisis and trauma work, focusing on suicidal ideation, domestic violence, sexual abuse, and human trafficking. In Ms. Waggoner’s spare time, she enjoys spending quality time with her son, friends, and extended family. She also enjoys traveling throughout the United States and abroad and being outdoors. She volunteers with a human trafficking ministry in the Houston area. Outside of counseling, she volunteers within her church community.
The Counseling Association for Advocacy and Development is a student organization within Columbus State University's Graduate Counseling Program. We are honored to partner with Dr. Adams and other distinguished guests to provide access to this conference for professionals in the field of Counseling. Our master's program offers both School and Clinical Mental Health Counseling tracks and is the second longest running CACREP accredited program in Georgia. We are dedicated to increasing professional development for students and community professionals, provide networking opportunities, and setting high standards of excellence for students and faculty alike. Columbus State's Graduate Counseling Program prides itself in that we go beyond the minimum standards and strive for innovation and adaptation as our field grows and changes.
