A river is a body of naturally flowing water that follows a defined and permanent path. Rivers are usually within a valley or depression in the land. A stream which can also be referred to as a creek or brook, is a natural flow of water. Streams are typically more temporary and can divert from a regular path. Streams do not usually occur in valleys. Many tributaries contribute to a river system.
