For this assignment, the Group Global Project, my partner and I took a deep dive into how technology works in two completely different parts of the world: Mexico and Somaliland. The main goal was to look past our own understanding and see how these communities, on a global landscape, handle the "digital divide"—digital Divide: the gap between those who have easy internet access and those who don’t. We didn't just look at numbers; we explored how things like local laws, the environment, and even the economy shape the way people connect.
The coolest thing I learned during my research is that Somaliland is actually a leader of the "cashless society" in Africa. Since traditional banks aren't always easy to find, people there use mobile services like Zaad and E-Dahab for almost everything. It’s a perfect example of how a community can be "mobile-first" out of pure necessity—their phones are basically their wallets.
On the flip side, Mexico did something pretty bold in 2013 by making internet access a constitutional right. With this, the government is legally required to make sure everyone has access to telecommunications and the internet, treating it as a basic necessity for living in the modern world.
Working on this project showed me that the "digital divide" isn't just about owning something like a laptop; it's about much bigger issues like the cost of electricity, where you live, and even how a country's laws are written. I also got way more comfortable using professional tools, like using Word’s "Styles" to keep my report looking clean and learning to follow the 6x6 rule to make sure my PowerPoint slides weren't just a giant wall of text. My partner and I split the work up so we could really focus; I took charge of the tech culture and climate data for Somaliland, while my partner handled the research for Mexico. We checked in with each other to make sure our flags, charts, and facts all flowed together well in the final presentation. In the end, I learned that collaboration is all about staying in the loop and finding creative ways to show how two very different places can actually have a lot in common
For this project, I researched Immersive Virtual Reality (VR) to see how it’s moving beyond just gaming and into professional fields. I specifically looked into how VR is being used as a tool for clinical training and medical rehabilitation, helping people recover from injuries in a safe, digital space.
I chose Virtual Reality because I’m fascinated by how a computer-generated environment can feel so real that it actually helps the brain relearn physical skills. It’s a huge shift from just reading about therapy to actually "doing" it in a controlled setting where mistakes don't have real-world consequences.
The most interesting thing I learned is that VR is now being used to train psychotherapists. A 2026 study showed that future therapists can actually practice "empathy" and building therapeutic relationships using VR simulations before they ever work with a real patient. I also found it cool that for stroke survivors, VR "games" can be more effective for relearning how to walk than traditional treadmill training alone.
Working on this presentation taught me how to take a really popular topic like VR and find the actual science behind it. I learned that while the tech is exciting, there are real hurdles like hardware costs and physical discomfort that developers have to manage. On the technical side, I got better at designing slides that follow the 6x6 rule, keeping the text short on screen but putting my full "script" in the slide notes so I had thorough information to consult. Most importantly, it made me realize that emerging tech isn't just about cool gadgets; it’s about finding new ways to make healthcare more accessible and engaging for people who really need it.
