I do see how I end up on the social media aspect of my phone too easily, so being told to take a break isn't surprising. I would say, however, that I haven't always been on my phone so much; the addition of short videos to these platforms made it exponentially worse than before. I actually don't have TikTok, X (Twitter), or Snapchat on my phone, which I thought was helpful. Then, Instagram moved "Reels" to be between your screens so that you land on them almost no matter what you came to do on the app. You are most likely going to see a short video, and that has been my downfall for sure.

"Am I ADDICTED to social media?" QUIZ
Oh dear....you really do seem ADDICTED to social media [Time To Log Off Social Media Addiction Quiz]

You NEED to get a grip on your social media habits! Scrolling through social media is your number one past time - you're never off the .gram, or TikTok, or Twitter or... (insert your favourite platform here). You spend an excessive amount of your day on social media, feeling that if something isn't recorded and posted on one of your accounts it didn't really happen. Sleep, eating, work, even your relationships, are all suffering as a result. Did you know that, in a famous study from Denmark, adults who spent a week off social media felt much happier with their lives? They also reported an increase in real-world social activity and were significantly less angry and lonely than those who stayed on social media. It's time to take your social media addiction seriously and embark on a digital detox.

"Seven-in-ten Facebook users say they use the site daily, including 49% who say they use the site several times a day."
(Auxier & Anderson, 2021)
I find this fascinating because, at first, I wasn't sure what you could really do on Facebook every day. After thinking about it, I realized the main reason I have Facebook—relatives and friends—is actually a good example. For instance, I have some aunts who like cooking and will post meals quite frequently. I also think Facebook can be a good thing to have, as many of these family members live in North or South Carolina (a 9-hour drive). Connection to their daily or weekly lives wouldn't really be available without Facebook.
My opinion is that social media can be either good or bad. However, the mix and variety of bad intentions that people can explore with social media definitely has an extremely large risk attached to it. Social media makes it possible to not feel invisible or like a freak because you can find like-minded people. On the other hand, if you begin to only interact with those like-minded people, you may begin to believe other opinions are inferior. The same applies to the way it is engineered; if you need a "brain break" to not think, it can provide that, but when you do that too much, you begin to lose time scrolling. Overall, it can be good in moderation, like most things.
I learned that YouTube is the most common platform and that the famous study in Denmark regarding a digital detox sounds like a good idea. I am also a little surprised by how strong Snapchat is staying, as I expected much less popularity by now. Finally, I realized my own scrolling is definitely out of control, and while I try not to get on my phone right when I wake up, I have to admit that I do sometimes.
