Chapter 4: Intellectual Property

The Maze Runner did not specifically focus on the development of intellectual property throughout the movie in favor of developing the characters and setting. However, there are specific instances in the movie that can be analyzed through this lens. The society in the Glade was built upon community and mutual trust, where everyone did their best to contribute. This lent itself to the formation of several different jobs that the leader, Alby, delegated amongst the people. One of these jobs is the Runner who was tasked with exploring the maze that trapped them in hopes of finding a way out. After expressing extreme curiosity about the outside maze, Thomas is given the role of a runner. The other runner, Minho, reveals to him that they had already mapped out the entire maze and learned the pattern with which it changes. They concealed this information from the rest of the Glade under the discretion of Alby, who believed this would provide people hope and motivate them to continue living. Although there was no idea of intellectual property in the Glade, the maze map would be considered Minho's property. Therefore, he would have full authority to share and distribute the information as he sees fit. If however, we treat the Glade as a company rather than a full society (which is more similar to how it operates anyway), then the information is treated as property of the Glade as a whole, and it is within Alby's authority to keep it hidden. Overall intellectual property was not a major part of the movie, as the emphasis was placed on action.
