This week, we're taking a look at one of Microsoft's projects, Holoportation, which in all aspects looks like a huge step towards the future. Holograms may feasibly enter the commercial (maybe even consumer) in the near future.
2 years ago, Microsoft released a video on their website showcasing their prototype Holoportation technology. According to Microsoft, "Holoportation is a new type of 3D capture technology that allows high quality 3D models of people to be reconstructed, compressed, and transmitted anywhere in the world in real-time."
Here we can see two users who are both wearing HoloLens. The man in plaid to the left is being hologramified to the man in white.
When you look at the the view he has in the HoloLens, you can see that there is a very Hologram-like look to him. Seeing this in reality really reminded me of a few scenes in cinema and show.
The first thing I thought about was the 'council' from Star Wars. I don't actually remember the context but there were surely many scenes everyone who has watched Star Wars remembers with Holograms. There's even probably a proper term used in the universe that i don't know.
With this video, it is not hard to imagine the potential of commercial use of Holograms to hold meetings EXACTLY how it is in Star Wars.
