According to James's manager, James was actually inspired by his readings of the Book of Ezekiel, which (he remembered as) speaking of a blue Shekhinah light that represented the presence of the Almighty God, and of the Book of Isaiah and Book of Revelation, which tell of a future age of brotherhood of mankind, living in peace and harmony.[3]

The song is referenced in Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four Annual (Vol. 1, No. 21) from 1988. The name references the character in the book, Crystalia Amaquelin, the blue area of the moon where part of the story takes place, and the plotline which is formed around coercing Crystal to return to the Inhumans.[16]

"Crystal Blue Persuasion" was prominently featured in the 2012 Breaking Bad episode "Gliding Over All", during an elaborate montage depicting the international drug smuggling operation for Walter White's signature blue crystal meth. The montage was subsequently parodied in a special intro to The Simpsons episode "What Animated Women Want" in 2013. The Breaking Bad montage was again parodied in the 2016 Bordertown episode "Borderwall", with a montage featuring a different type of illicit smuggling operation. The Simpsons again featured the song in "Crystal Blue-Haired Persuasion" in 2019.

"This started out simply as an abstract experiment. Initially with just the blue "crystal" part and later adding in the colored bars. The way the blue spreads over part of the bars was an aspect of I really liked. Later on the song "crystal Blue Persuasion" occurred to me and it just fit."

What I love so much about the show is the psychology behind it. That being said, I wanted to somehow depict Walt's transition from the protagonist in the show, to the antagonist. Most of the imagery in this piece should be taken literally. The blue crystals pouring out of his neck and head represent the meth business getting to his head, the transition from doing it "for his family" to doing it solely for himself. He's in the "empire business".

This little blue chandelier started life out as a very tacky wrought iron lamp with an equally tacky green and black verdigris finish that was quite dreadful. It was one of two identical hanging lamps that I bought at the Chinese store last year. I bought them both only because they were on sale and seemed to be screaming out for a makeover. And everyone knows that you should never separate twins. Neither of the lamps had any crystals on them and they were missing all the lightbulbs as well, but they had potential. And I had a box of lamp crystals lurking in a drawer. And have I ever mentioned how obsessed I am with chandeliers? I am always on the lookout for old naked chandeliers, even if I have nowhere to hang them anymore. So, here is what I started out with:

I spray painted this chandy a nice bright sky blue making sure that every inch of that ugly green/black finish was covered. Then I began to add the sparkly stuff. I had some acrylic flatback rhinestones in a baggie. Even though they were acrylic, they were very sparkly.

Sensuous jasmine sambac, warm resins, bergamot, and petitgrain sur fleurs... this blend is accented with relaxing "butterfly pea flowers" (used as a plant colorant for hundreds of years) which transforms your bath into a magical blue paradise vacation. Your bath water will be reminiscent of blue watercolor paint.

PRO TIP

This is our favorite bath for feeling young again. To attain feeling, squeeze the rehydrated butterfly pea flowers to release concentrated blue color and use as a "paintbrush" on your canvas (your body). You're welcome. ;)

Many listeners thought "Crystal Blue Persuasion" was a drug song advocating the use of "crystal meth" (Methamphetamine). In 1979, noted music writer Dave Marsh described it as "a transparent allegory about James' involvement with amphetamines." However, until the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) was enacted into law by the Congress of the United States as Title II of the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970, most illicit amphetamine use involved the more readily available pharmaceutical grade pill form rather than the then-rare "crystal meth" form. It was after the pill form became harder to obtain on the street due to the CSA that "crystal meth" rose in popularity. Thus it is unlikely that "Crystal Blue Persuasion", being written before 1970, would refer to "crystal meth". e24fc04721
