In addition to Gloria Ladson-Billings' foundational contributions to multicultural education, there are multiple researchers who have also provided significant additions to the body of work.
Geneva Gay
In 2000, Dr. Gay published, her first edition of Culturally Responsive Teaching: Theory, Research, and Practice (now in it's third edition). She coined and defined Culturally Responsive Teaching as, "using the cultural knowledge, prior experiences, frames of reference, and performance styles of ethnically diverse students to make learning encounters more relevant to and effective for them. It is culturally validating and affirming".
Also in 2001, Dr. Howard published two articles adding to the culturally relevant body of literature. They were, Powerful pedagogy for African American students: A case of four teachers and Telling their side of the story: African-American students' perceptions of culturally relevant teaching. Emerging themes from his research include (a) Holistic instructional strategies; (b) culturally consistent communicative competencies; (c) skill-building strategies to promote academic success.
Tyrone Howard
Christine Sleeter
Dr. Sleeter, published an article in 2001 called, Preparing Teachers for Culturally Diverse Schools: Research and the overwhelming presence of whiteness. She argues that research up until that point had not addressed how to create a teaching profession with quality multicultural teachers.
Paris and Alim published, Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies: Teaching and Learning for Justice in a Changing World in 2017. These scholars suggest the starting point that Ladson-billings gave needs to be sustainable given the ever-changing world and added a new element of youth culture to the conversation of multicultural education.
Here is a video that explains the difference between Culturally Relevant Pedagogy and Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy.
