One of the most important ways to prevent liver flukes in ruminants is taking them off the pastures that may hold more moisture of where more snails may be found. When animals are not on pastures with snails it makes it virtually impossible to get Fasciola hepatica. Though it is still possible if wildlife or other infected ruminants have had access to the pasture. Fencing off sections of moist cool pasture and keeping animals inside until the morning dew is off the grass is the best prevention method, though it may not be the most feasible. Using molluscicides is in option though it must be done with extreme care since some may be toxic to livestock.
Managing your animals is the same if not more important then pasture management. All incoming livestock must be treated with a flukicide and remain quarantined for the proper amount of time. This is so important for preventing transmission of liver flukes to other animals in your herd. Any animal in the herd who shows signs should also be immediately quarantined until proper treatment has been provided. Once they are no longer contagious then they may be reintroduced back into the herd.Â
