The earliest railroad crossing gate is in fact the Wishbone Gate. Before the 1960s, all the railroad crossing with gates had wooden wishbone gates. They also had black and white stripes, instead of the modern day red and white stripes. Although after the 1970s, metal gates were favored over wishbone gates and many of the wishbone gates were replaced due to the weak wooden infrastructure. Wishbone gates stopped being produced in the 1990s, although most railroad companies stopped producing them by the 1980s. Many of the surviving wishbone gates are on abandoned railroads since the signals do not need to be updated.
