The Magnetic Flag or 'Wig Wag' as many railfans like to name it was developed by Albert Hunt, who worked for the Pacific Electric, in 1907. Sadly, shortly after World War II, the Magnetic Flagman Company was sold to Griswold Signal Co. They produced wig wags in Minneapolis, Griswold's headquarters until 1949. After WWII a few wig wags at particularly buys grade crossing were replaced with flashers or gates. By the late 1990s wig wags were being replaced rapidly and have become very scarce.
