The sport of using a map and compass to navigate is called orienteering. Although simple to learn, it's never easy. The goal is to run a sequence of locations on the map and select routes (both on and off trail) that will enable you to locate every point and return to the finish line in the quickest period. You may verify that you have visited a point by looking for orange and white punches and flags marking the locations on the course. Every "control" sign is situated on a different landmark, such as the top of a mound or the intersection of two streams.
