The Department of Agricultural Entomology, TNAU, Coimbatore had its humble beginning in the year 1906 with the initiation of research on economic aspects of Agricultural Entomology in the then Madras Presidency. In 1912 an independent fledgling of the Entomology section was started and the first Government Entomologist, Dr. T. B. Fletcher, carried forward the activities at Coimbatore. In the year 1920 undergraduate degree programme was started. In the year 1959, the Department started the M.Sc. (Ag.) programme. Ph.D courses are offered since 1961.
Mandate
- To teach Agricultural Entomology in graduate, post graduate and doctoral degree programmes.
- To catalogue crop pests and their natural enemies and productive insects.
- To conduct research on various fields viz., host plant resistance, biocontrol, insecticide toxicology and insect behaviour to develop Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for crop and storage pests.
- To impart training to agricultural extension functionaries on pest surveillance, IPM, apiculture, storage entomology, acarology, rodents etc. and
- To disseminate IPM technologies to the farming community through various extension functionaries.
