Marital rape disrupts societal views of marriage, gender, and sexual violence. In this project, students were interested in the evolution of marital rape, case law, and legal exemptions. Using
LexisNexis and
Justia legal databases, students examined historical case law and contemporary high-profile cases to create a timeline of marital rape. They conclude by connecting their timeline to previous research in the field, noting that marital rape is rooted in the patriarchal belief that women are property and and thus not allowed bodily autonomy.
