Sexual Violence: Gendering Campus Space and Residential Policies at Marquette University
For this study, students examined how campus space and policies are gendered. Using interviews and archival analysis, they investigated residential policies and student perceptions, attitudes, and experiences of campus residence halls, sorority and fraternity houses. The researchers concluded that residence halls are constructed as gender-neutral spaces however, policies and differential enforcement created potentially unsafe spaced for women. Sororities were feminized spaces where rules related to parties and alcohol consumption were strictly enforced. Fraternities were identified as hyper-masculinized spaces with limited enforcement of rules including use of alcohol in a high-risk environment. Students connected their work to prior findings on campus sexual assault, concluding that gendered space and campus policies contribute to increased risk of sexual violence.

Marquette Student Perceptions of Campus Safety, Consent, and Resources
Students created an anonymous survey for Marquette students to understand how they perceive campus safety, resources, and perceptions of sexual consent. The survey included four sections: demographics, perceptions of safety, perceptions of sexual consent, and knowledge of resources. Gender significantly predicted feelings of safety on campus and number of protective actions taken in response such as walking in groups and carrying protective weapons. Gender also affected perceptions of sexual consent. Overall, students felt somewhat knowledgeable about resources available to students on Marquette's campus, but most did not know specifics.

In order to explore how women are taught to avoid rape and sexual assault, students completed in-depth interviews with women spanning four generations including: Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z. Researchers examined how "safety advice" was similar or different across time and marked generation. Findings showed that conversations about sex and sexual violence differed between generations of women as did experiences. However, "safety tips" provided to women routinely perpetuated rape myths and victim blaming, regardless of time period.

According to RAINN, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted every 73 seconds. Students were interested in studying how sexual violence affects individuals, and the process of healing and recovery. The researchers collected and reviewed online published survivor stories to identify themes in recovery processes. The impact of sexual violence is significant, and expands beyond the survivor to their family, friends, and communities. Students created two complementary digital mediums to vividly and creatively share how survivors recover, heal, and survive rape and sexual assault. Click on the StoryMap link and blog sites below.

According to the Human Trafficking Institute, Wisconsin ranks 6th in the nation for sex trafficking prevalence. Here, students created a digital scholarship webpage on sex trafficking. They concentrated on compiling data and statistics on the prevalence of trafficking, risk-factors for victimization, the aftermath and psychology, and resources for prevention and intervention. The researchers also interviewed local experts in Milwaukee, WI working at organizations that serve the community and address issues of violence and sex trafficking. These organizations included The Benedict Center and Pathfinders.

For this project, students analyzed multiple sites for defining characteristics such as technological features and evidence of trafficking. Timeline of a Movement: #MeToo and Violence Against Women
Interested in recent social movements on social media platforms, students researched the founding of the hashtag #MeToo and its evolution between 2006-2020. Students developed a timeline of related hashtags, describing various transformations and extensions such as #NotGuilty and #TimesUp.

A Legal History of Marital Rape
A Legal History of Marital Rape
Marital rape disrupts societal views of marriage, gender, and sexual violence. In this project, students were interested in the evolution of marital rape, case law, and legal exemptions. Using LexisNexis and Justia legal databases, students examined historical case law and contemporary high-profile cases to create a timeline of marital rape. They conclude by connecting their timeline to previous research in the field, noting that marital rape is rooted in the patriarchal belief that women are property and and thus not allowed bodily autonomy.

Students examined the development of sex offender registration and notification in the U.S. with explicit focus on juveniles. Research included topics related to impact, effectiveness, and prevention of sexual violence. Students included personal experiences of juveniles on the registry, focusing on how they navigated the legal system and civil collateral consequences. They developed a timeline of registration and notification legislation and highlighted the work of Attorney Nicole Pittman, founder of the Center on Youth Registration Reform with a final video.

Student researchers created a creative StoryMap charting work through time and location, pinpointing significant periods and art pieces across the U.S. Students described the accompanying social movements that marked each time period and the impacts on sexual assault awareness and survivors themselves.

How can paradigms shift to adopt rehabilitation-focused interventions? Students answered these questions with a meta-analysis of the literature in psychology, criminology, and neuroscience and presented their findings and conclusions on the website linked here.
After extensive research, students asked the question: Why is our current system of sex offender sentencing and accountability a failure? What are the fundamental flaws?
