Social justice and activism has become more prevalent now than it’s ever been due in a large part to the rise of social media, which has allowed for more people’s voices to be heard via Facebook, Instagram, and especially twitter. It’s known that libraries have always been institutions of cultural heritage. So it makes perfect sense for libraries to become involved in social justice reform as they often advocated for the preservation history knowing it’s full of diversity.

SLIS 797 centered on how the library is the beacon of social justice with very justifiable reasons backing that claim up. Libraries are pretty much the key supports of the social justice movement in any form or fashion. It’s more than just books and collecting catalogs, the library is also about inclusion, tolerance, and catering to people of all backgrounds. It’s safe to say that libraries have always taken on the responsibility of meeting the constant changes communities go through making them something of a leader in the sense of their being more effective cultural changes in society.

With the library adapting over time, technology is something that would be inevitably introduced into the library and better help it’s continuing being a hub to the community. This course let me understand how prevalent social justice was in the library and how to use technology to spread the awareness of it more rapidly. The impact of social media is something that fuels a lot of the world now and it’s an ideal platform to provide digital resources and services for that matter specifically. Platforms such as Facebook, twitter, and TikTok have become such driving forcing in the world of technology with how they’ve become the focal point for most social justice advocates and activities it’s understandable to see how a skill such as this has become one that is mandatory to learn when going into a profession such as this. The library has always been looked at as an establishment that would become the voice for issues that occur in the world, so it makes sense to have a skill that understands the role of technology within the library.
