Plane

The closest airport is that of the city of Heraklion Kazatzakis Airport. Aegean Airlines fly regularly to Heraklion from Athens and Thessaloniki (Salonica). 

From April to October there are also numerous direct charter flights from many places in Europe.

From the airport you can reach the center of Heraklion (~5 Kms) where most hotels are located, the seaside suburb of Amoudara (~8-9 Kms) where some other hotels are located and the Physics Department (~13 Kms), either by taxi or by bus.

Travel by bus

The workshop venue is easily accessible by bus from the city center. Both bus number 11 (PANEPISTIMIO/PAGNI) and bus number 8 (ITE) service the Physics Department from downtown Heraklion, with a journey time around 30 minutes. While both these lines stop throughout the center on their way to the university, two prominent stops are Eleutherias Square and Chanioporta. 

Bus tickets can be purchased either from the dedicated machines at the major stops (usually cash/coins only), or from any of the small kiosks/tobacco shops throughout the city. The ticket required for this journey is typically referred to as a "blue" ticket, and should cost around 1.75 euro each way (this fluctuates from time to time). It is typically prudent to buy them in pairs, such that you don't need to hunt out a ticket for the return journey when the time comes. In principle you can also buy them from the driver with a small surcharge--however this can be more trouble than it's worth, as the driver may not be very accommodating if it's busy, he's had a bad day, his team lost, etc. 

Somewhat confusingly, to return to the city center from the university, you will take either bus number 1 (AERODROMIO) or 20 (LIMANI)  from in front of the physics department (both pass through the center).

Travel by car

While the bus routes generally provide adequate access to the university, they are unsuitable for longer excursions or in situations which require strict adherence to a schedule (i.e. a narrow window for flight departure). In such circumstances, it is preferable to travel by car.

Taxi services in and around the city are generally affordable and efficient. However, be aware that not all cabs will be able to accept payment via credit card, and some care is required to avoid being taken advantage of by unscrupulous drivers. You may wish to inquire about an approximate cost for the journey before entering the car.

Maximal travel freedom is acheived through the use of a rental car. This means of transport is also the only viable way to explore the more remote corners of the island (a very worthy endeavor!). Note that the parking in the city center can be a chore, but there are a number of paid garages which can alleviate this stress.
