Carnival
Head- Liberty and Brooklyn
JR head- Madeline
Carnival Committee is centered around the October Halloween Carnival and is one of the main income events for NHS. In this event, elementary students pay for a ticket which lets them access the games, face painting, snacks/dinner, activities, and a haunted house included in the Carnival. If you are a member of the Carnival Committee you will be expected to attend meetings prior to the carnival as well as attend and help administrate the carnival itself. Jobs include (but are not limited to) helping set up and clean up the carnival, being a part of the haunted house, administering games, helping with food or tickets, doing face paint, etc. This creates a fun and safe place for elementary students to celebrate Halloween!
Sustainability
Head- Katie and Blakely
JR head- Riley
Sustainability Committee is focused on educating students on how to be environmentally conscious as well as being a part of the group that oversees recycling and composting. While recycling is not the main job of this committee, you may be asked to help out when someone is unable to do their recycling. Possible events Sustainability can initiate are asking speakers to talk to the school, creating educational videos around sustainability, or other events such as an Earth Day event. This is an ongoing committee as well as a main event typically occurring mid-winter*.
Empty bowls
Head- Mara and Oliver
JR head- Nicola
The main objective of Empty Bowls Committee is to help with food insecurity within the Gunnison Valley. As a member of this committee, some roles may include contacting local restaurants for soup/salad/other food items, coordinating with McGill’s (the venue), and painting the bowls which will be used for the event. At the event, people buy a bowl as a ticket for dinner and the money made at the event goes towards food security within our valley, typically as a donation for Mountain Roots. You will be expected to attend this event to be a part of this committee, and it usually takes place in February/March* during the evening.
Safety day
Head- Liberty and Katie
JR Head- Ethan K
Safety Day Committee is primarily responsible for educating the elementary school about how to be safe within our community. This includes road, school, and pool safety, or any safety education that the Elementary Principal deems necessary for the school year. If you are a part of this committee, you will be asked to help set up the event, make signs, and be a part of teaching the elementary school about different types of safety likely during lunch across one or two days. This event takes place towards the end of the school year in the spring. This year we want to create a safety day for the secondary end to help educate them on substance abuse, safe driving. and basic first aid.
Career day
Head- Henrick and Kelsey
JR head-Hannah
Local professionals in a specific field come to school and educate students about their job. This permits students to learn about the job options and aids them in making decisions in high school in order to prepare them for the future.
Mental health (switches off with career day) 2022 is Career Day
Head-
Mental health day is dedicated to the education of different facets of mental health (including stress, depression, self harm, self care, meditation, and more). Designate professionals share their knowledge of the importance of mental health. In previous years we have also included snacks and massages for the students in the classrooms and the library. Mental health is extremely important and this year we want to make this a center of NHS.
