5th Canadian PhD and Early Career Workshop

in Environmental and Resource Economics

Call for Participants

The Canadian Resource and Environmental Economics Association (CREEA) is inviting PhD students and early career researchers working on topics in resource and environmental economics to a 2-day workshop to be held at University of Calgary on June 3-4 2019.

CREEA is welcoming applications from those researching any aspect of environmental economics (environmental behavior, energy economics, climate change, green business or natural resource problems) using theory, empirics or experimental methods, and based in economics departments, business schools, schools of public policy, etc. In previous editions, the workshop has convened around 20 early-stage researchers from inside and outside Canada from institutions such as Yale, Queens, Amsterdam, UBC, Ottawa, Paris, Columbia, McGill, Berkeley, Alberta, Cornell, Oslo, Toronto, Vienna, Calgary.

Sessions are built around 30-minute presentations, giving participants the chance to expose their ideas and get feedback from junior colleagues and senior scholars. Social time will give an excellent opportunity for participants to network, exchange ideas and experiences and get to know each other. The atmosphere is informal and collegial.

This year’s keynote guests are Professor Werner Antweiler (UBC) and Professor Charles Mason (Wyoming). Both are distinguished environmental economists and have been involved in the editing of journals such as JAERE, JEEM, REE and CJE. They will provide feedback on presentations and lead economics career workshops (tips on finding research topics, navigating the job market, getting papers published, managing the tenure process, etc.).

Venue

The workshop will be held at the University of Calgary, at the foot of the Rocky Mountains and only a few minutes from downtown. The workshop follows the 2019 CEA Annual Congress in Banff (May 30 - June 2).

Expenses

There is no registration fee. Lunch and refreshments on both days and a Workshop Dinner and social event on June 3 will be provided for everybody. Participants coming from outside Calgary will be provided with 2 nights’ accommodation on campus (June 2 to June 4).

The Smart Prosperity Institute in Ottawa has generously agreed to finance a number of travel grants for participants coming from Canadian universities. Please indicate at time of submission whether you wish to be considered for this support and whether your participation is contingent upon funding.
