Kara Helgemo
Director of Creative Edge Synchronized Skating Teams, Coach of Open Juvenile and Pre Juvenile Teams
Kara Helgemo is a national and international medalist in synchronized skating. She began skating at Lakeland when she was six years old, but when she was nine years old she discovered synchronized skating. She skated with Lakeland's synchronized skating teams for seven years winning the Midwestern Sectional Championships back to back in 1999 and 2000. After leaving Lakeland's program, Kara skated with Team Elan out of the Detroit Skating Club for four seasons. Through her tenure at DSC she competed at the junior and senior level. She was a member of Team USA and represented the United States at competitions in France, Italy, and twice in the Czech Republic. Throughout this time she continued to grow as a skater while also coaching synchronized skating teams at Lakeland as well as at DSC. As of now, Kara has coached teams at various levels including Introductory, all three age groups within the Beginner division, Pre-Juvenile, Open Juvenile, Preliminary, Juvenile, Intermediate, and Novice. Additionally, Kara holds her gold moves in the field test. In 2008, a Novice team and a Juvenile team Kara assisted received 2nd at the United States Synchronized Skating National Championships in Providence, Rhode Island. In 2010, an Open Juvenile and a Pre-Juvenile team Kara co-coached won the Midwestern Sectional Championship in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In 2016, Kara became a national level coach when the Intermediate team she coached placed 3rd out of 22 teams at the Midwestern Sectional Championships, and then also made Lakeland history by qualifying for the U.S. Synchronized Skating National Championships where they placed 5th. She is currently a member of the Professional Skater's Association and completes yearly continuing education requirements. She has also received intensive training in the International Judging System (IJS) by select International Skating Union (ISU) and US Figure Skating officials. Kara holds her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education and her Master of Arts in Educational Leadership K-12 Administration. She currently works as an elementary school teacher in a local school district. She is also in the process of obtaining her Educational Specialist in Educational Leadership degree from Oakland University with the intention of completing the doctoral program in Educational Leadership.
Karen Felice
Coach of Open Juvenile and Synchro Skills 1 Teams
With more than a decade of competitive synchronized skating experience and twenty-two years of synchro coaching to her credit, Karen Felice has achieved a wide range of experience at nearly every level of the sport. From 1985-1995 she competed across the country at the Juvenile, Intermediate, Novice, and Senior team levels with Team Elan, winning an international Senior Championship and nine National medals, including gold in the senior division in 1995. As a Professional Skater's Association rated coach, Karen has fielded and co-coached teams in the Youth, Beginner, Pre-Juvenile, Open Juvenile, Intermediate, Novice, Adult Masters and the Junior Classic divisions. Karen is also a national level coach in synchronized skating. Her individual skaters have achieved their Senior Moves in the Field tests and regional competitor medals. Karen has also coached theater on ice for the past four years. Karen began her skating career at Lakeland Arena at the age of two and a half. She is trained in ballet, tap, and jazz and was a member of the Southfield Ice Show. She holds a bachelors degree from Oakland University with a specialization in training and development.
Alyssa Bremner
Coach of Open Juvenile, Pre Juvenile, and Synchro Skills 1 Teams
Alyssa Bremner began skating when she was four years old and has competed in synchronized skating for the past thirteen seasons. During those thirteen seasons, she has skated on a range of levels including Youth Introductory, Pre Juvenile, Open Juvenile, Intermediate, Novice, Junior, Senior, Collegiate, Open Collegiate, and Adult. She was a member of Team USA for one year. Alyssa graduated from Adrian College in with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology and Criminal Justice. During her time at Adrian, she was a member of four honors societies and was also a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. Alyssa is a gold medalist in moves in the field, holds her Intermediate freestyle test, and is currently working to complete her final ice dance tests. Alyssa is also completing her master's degree in counseling through Oakland University. Outside of skating, Alyssa works at a residential care facility for girls that have been neglected and abused.
