Starting a Piece of Writing

Step 1

Before starting a piece of writing you need to decide the purpose of the writing. There are 4 main types of Writing; Expository, Persuasive, Narrative and Descriptive. Here is brief description an example.

Writing that is Expository includes: Instructions, Reports and Explanations.

They are based on facts, expository is based on the word expose.

Persuasive writing includes: Reviews and Debates.

They are based on a personal opinion using information from known or researched facts or from the reviewed item.

Narrative writing includes: Short stories, Novellas, Novels.

They are trying to tell a story either real or imagined. The reader learns about the character and the character often grows though the story.

Descriptive writing includes: Recounts and Poetry.

They are trying to give the reader a detailed description of a place, event or character.

These often use similar ideas to start or hook the reader in.

These too need a hook to get the reader's attention but they often use heading or questions to help direct the reader.

These are used to argue a point of view, in a debate or discussion. With enough evidence you may end up changing the other person point of view.
