Building the Course Structure
Before we begin this section, take a quick a look at some samples of online course:
In designing any course or teaching module (face-to-face or online), we can use any suitable model or framework. In this course I would like to adopt Gilly Salmon's Five Stage Model.
Basically, the online course can be designed as:
- direct instructional course (teacher-centred—passively just delivering content) or
- interactive, activity-based learning

Let's start building this type of online course or teaching module.
This type of online course consist of two components:
- STRUCTURE (OUTLINE)—Transform your ideas and materials into actionable steps.
- CONTENT: Present the content in the form of video, audio or text.
We will be using Google Sites to build the course. Here are some of my online teaching/training modules I created using Google Sites:
To build the structure or the outline of the course, we will refer to my course:

Prepare the outline or the structure of the course:
- A descriptive title
- One line concise description
- What you will learn (learning objectives or learning outcomes)
- Requirements/Pre-requisite
- Detail description of the course
- Course content
- About the instructor
Prepare the content
Content is usually presented in the form of video, audio or text—but mainly video. Therefore, for a DIY online course creation, it is highly recommended for course instructor to acquire the skill to create a video.

As the name implies, this type of online course is designed with a learner-centred approach, i.e., the learners are actively involved DOING the activities designed to construct the knowledge and enable the learners to CREATE their own meaning.

- ACTIVITY—The activities are carefully designed to align with the intended learning outcomes.
Let's explore the following courses first and study how the courses are structured and how the activities are integrated seamlessly with the content.
In the next lesson, you will learn how to design the appropriate online activities and how to integrate different types of media (content) seamlessly. You will also learn selected tools (applications) that can be used to create learning activities that would engage the learners.
