As a San Jose native and lover of all carbs, I've compiled a short list of my favorite, local bakeries. Be sure to check out these bakeries and let me know which places have your new favorite baked goodies. ;)
Formerly named Century Bakery, the bakery reopened its doors under a new name and not too far from its original location. CA Bakehouse is tucked away in the Vietnam Town Plaza next door to the Grand Century Mall. Parking can be difficult to find at times since there's a bunch of other small businesses in the plaza. Although the storefront is small, there is a great variety of pastries and baked goods. The bakers are always innovating and creating new recipes too.
My favorites include their mochi muffins and Portuguese egg tarts. The mochi muffins remind me of the mochi muffins from Third Culture Bakery in Berkeley, CA. Crispy on the outside; chewy and soft on the inside! These are just as good and I don't have to make a trip to San Francisco or Berkeley either. Compared to the traditional Chinese egg tarts with its shortbread crust, I actually prefer Portguese egg tarts for its flaky, buttery crust. I love how the egg yolk center just melts in my mouth as soon as I take a bite!
The kaya (pandan) choux, black sesame choux, and durian egg tart are also the bomb. My family doesn't have much of a sweet tooth, but they enjoyed all three of the pastries! My dad isn't easily impressed, yet he still asked me the name of the bakery since he wants to buy some pastries for my grandma's birthday.
Clover Bakery & Cafe is located inside Strawberry Park Shopping Center. Parking is definitely a struggle for me every time I come here. The parking lot is already really small, and there's so many other businesses (grocery store, restaurants, etc.) that share the same space. Inside, the bakery is pretty small with limited seating. The bakery is cutely decorated, and they play soothing sounds of music box music.
The bakery sells an assortment of Japanese pastries, breads, and onigiri (rice balls). I know onigiris aren't considered as "baked goods." (But hey, it's still a carb.) The unagi (eel) and tuna mayo onigiris are probably my favorite from this place. So simple, yet delicious. You can also find some of their breads and onigiris next door in the Mituswa Marketplace. Clover Bakery & Cafe sells unique breads, such as yakisoba bread, croquette bread, and crab and roe bread.
This bakery reminds me so much of my travels in Japan last winter. There was a bakery near my Air BnB (I wish I remembered the name) that sold similar breads and pastries. I also pretty much ate my weight in onigiri for breakfast every day.
Peters' Bakery is definitely a staple in San Jose. It's been open since 1936! Parking is also very limited. There's some street parking and parking in the back of the bakery. Every time I go there, it always seems to be very busy, but customer service is quick!
This bakery is famous for its burnt almond cake! Personally, I've only gone to this bakery for its burnt almond cupcakes (the perfect size for me). In the fall, they have a seasonal pumpkin favor for their burnt almond cake (drool). The burnt almond cake is a little on the sweeter side, so I like to pair it with a glass of almond milk (almond overload). I always see the strawberry ring in the case, but I have yet to try it. The strawberry ring is gigantic! It's basically a huge cream puff sandwich in the shape of a ring with sliced strawberries.
Every time my cousin comes back in town, she buys at least a dozen burnt almond cupcakes to bring back to SoCal to share with her friends!
