Five years ago my water heater burst and I had moved a box of archived documents to the basement while I painted and re-organized my study. My documents were ruined after sitting in a foot of water. Not only did I have to deal with the clean up, getting a new hot water heater, but knowing backups of work over the years was gone ... all gone. The cleanup of a broken hot water heater was easier than losing my files! However, around the same time, I started revising some Virtual High School courses by employing instructional design methods and ensuring the courses met Quality Matters standards.
Storyboards
I've been able to create storyboards in PPT, Word, and on the fly in Storyline. This example here is one page of a storyboard for a module that includes background information, knowledge check questions, videos, and interactivities.
This was created for an FAA contract.
The entire course was six modules and included meetings with SMEs to learn the content, storyboard reviews, an Alpha review, and then a Beta review. For this project, I was responsible for meeting with the SMEs and creating the storyboards.
This shows a "before" and "after" of some of the courses that I worked on. The courses were created in SoftChalk (less robust than Storyline and Captivate) and eventually I was able to use Storyline (yeah!) and make the courses look even better!
I was asked to make a course on substance abuse. The content had been in PPT form with text, some images, and a few practice questions to keep the learners' attentions. I downloaded the original content, did some research (using sources such as government websites), incorporated the original content, added self-checks, and just helped make it more student-centered. This was a quick turn around - 1 week! And ... after my mom had been in the ICU and my husband had back surgery - I felt like a rock star getting this done!! The file linked is the video quiz, "Alcohol and the Brain".
