What is Respiratory Syncytial Virus?

Centers for Disease Control reports that Respiratory Syncytial (sin-SISH-uhl) Virus, or RSV, is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. Most people recover in a week or two, but RSV can be serious. Infants and older adults are more likely to develop severe RSV and need hospitalization. The season typically begins in September and ends at the end of January.

How is RSV spread or transmitted?

Through the air from a cough or sneeze from an infected person or direct contact with the virus from touching a surface with the virus on it and then touching your face before washing your hands.

How do I prevent the spread of RSV?

If you are feeling sick with cold-like symptoms cover your coughs and sneezes, wash your hands, clean commonly touched surfaces like door knobs frequently, and avoid close contact with others. Click here for more information.

Who is most at risk from severe RSV disease?

Infants and young children (click for more information). Pregnant women (click for the FDA press release) can now protect their newborns by getting vaccinated for RSV. At the end of September, CDC (click for CDC press release) began recommending seasonal administration of one dose of RSV vaccine for pregnant women 32 - 36 weeks gestation .
