The Bedford Historical Slave Foundation (BHSF) mission is to be a center for research, promotion and preservation of a genealogical archive, repository of artifacts and educational curriculum, and archive of family and historical stories of Bedford County, Virginia, African American history and culture. BHSF engages both local and online communities to tell a more complete story of African Americans' ancestry and historical contributions, fostering an understanding of shared roots within communities bearing plantation history, and seeking to become a reconciling force between races, focused on Bedford County and beyond.
We are in the process of hiring a BHSF Director who will lead the organization toward achieving its mission by performing genealogical and historical research, managing website and social media presence, and establishing community and online relationships.
BHSF is also in the process of seeking grants to rehabilitate the Court Street Methodist Church to become a learning center to provide: static and video displays of Bedford County Black history and culture, with exhibits, photographs, maps and artifacts; narratives from individuals and families shared via audio recording; genealogical research using the BHSF archive and networking computers; a fully accessible gathering place with kitchenette facilities for family, educational, and non-profit groups; and a display area for the church's history.
Please consider donating to BHSF and its mission.
