Identify the part(s) of your plan you were able to implement.
I haven't been able to implant any parts of my plan yet unfortunately due to my principal wasn't helpful through my process. I plan to show this to my local Union member chairman when im finished to see how she can get this out into the people who can do something about it. I talked to my other para's and they are definitely for a some updated policies and hoping to see some change.
How successful was your plan of action at addressing the challenge?
This has by far been very challenging for me but im hoping by the conversation I have had with fellow paras that I can help make some changes. Our paras haven't felt supported in a few years. I think it has to do with who our principle is currently. When we try to bring up a problem, we basically get ignored or told he is to busy dealing with other things. I have texted him a few times and he gets the messages and reads them but doesn't respond. He is hardly in his office so it's hard to go chat with him. I have emailed him asking for help with this project and he responded with I will get back to you on this.
This was when we had to come up with a problem to we would change.
Which stakeholders and policy were impacted?
Staff members in my classroom have been all for getting some policies revised and looked at because they are out of date. Our para are looking go get and feel supported in their roles. We as para want to feel included but 90% of us just feel like aren't all on the same team. Because para isn't included in meetings, for example, our all-staff meetings are scheduled after our hours. This year the special educator coordinators put in that we have to stay for 30 extra minutes once a week to have prep time or team meeting. We only met three times in total.
I was fold no about sending out a survey so had to come up with my own so I did face-to-face conversation with colleagues
How do you know?
I believe that this will impact everyone as paras once we get the policy changes. I also feel like this will make Peres want to stay in their current position. I also am hoping thaI also feel like this will make Peres want to stay in their current position. I also am hoping that we will start feeling supported and our voices will be heard because we are people with full potential.
How were your four chosen competencies used in the implementation of your project?
Overarching Competency #1 Interpersonal Effectiveness to seek opportunities and become more effective when supporting coworkers. I want to create opportunities for teachers to feel like they are getting the support they need. Also would like to bring in different ways to coach support staff.
Overarching Competency #2 Personal Effectiveness to adapt to all situations. I want to help with creating a feeling of balance. I also want to work on resilience.
Diversity- Equity-Cultural Competence: Explore and Challenge Inequity and Collaborate purposefully.
Policy Competency: Policy Making because some of our policies haven't been updated in years.
What obstacles, if any, did you encounter?
I feel like the pandemic has been very difficult on students and staff at all schools over the last couple of years. We went from in person learning to shelter in place and working from home. I finally stopped counting on how many times classrooms were shut downdue to covid. It felt like everyday our attendance wasnt the same from before covid.
The last email I could find about our program being shut down
How did you address them?
This one has been a struggle for me personally because I don’t feel like I’m being heard or being supported in this process. So I will be taking this to Dave Rott who is Executive Director of Human Resources. I will also take it to the superintendent.
Given the outcomes, describe any changes you might make to the Capstone project.
I am feeling confident about the work ive done so far, however the important work is not done. I am realizing that some of this work, though critical at my building level, will need to happen at our district level. So my next step is to take it to my union and ask them how to go about taking it to the district level.
Learned from the gifted Edconfrence that we all need social and emotional needs.
