Insert smart chips in your Google Doc to include information about other users with Gmail/Workspace email addresses , Google Drive files, dates, Google Calendar events, and places. Additionally, there is a dropdown smart chip that can be used in a variety of ways. Any where there’s a smart chip in your document, you and other users can hover or click on it to get more information.
Using these smart chips allow you to add extra layers of information to a document that collaborators can interact with to view additional information about people and places.
Note: If a person is not in your contacts or you haven't emailed them before, you may have difficulty adding a smart chip for that person. If this is the case, add the person and email to contacts.google.com first.
Using the File smart chip you can allow for quick access to Docs, Sheets, or Slides files. Once a file smart chip is added, collaborators can hover over it to view options for previewing the file.
This tutorial will go over the various ways to add Date smart chips to your Google Doc. You'll also learn what you can do with a Date smart chip once added.
Using the Calendar smart chip you can link your document directly to past or upcoming Google Calendar event.
The Dropdown smart chip, in my opinion, is the best one as it allows you the most flexibility. Here you will learn how to add a dropdown chip by either selecting a preset dropdown or creating one from scratch. Because dropdown chips are customizable, there are many classroom applications for this feature such as rubrics, check lists, and fill in the blank type activities.
NOTE: Dropdown chips are also available in Google Sheets
It is easy to see how Smart Chips can enhance documents like meeting notes and agendas. But how can Smart Chips by applied to the classroom setting? In this video, I will show you several examples of ways to incorporate Dropdown smartchips to create sign ups, groupings, rubrics, checklists, and assignments.
There are some new smart chips that have been announced by Google. Please note that these will only be available in Education Plus accounts, so you won't see them in your personal account.
View this resource to see how to use these and when to expect them to hit your account. This will be updated as more chips are added.
